·        U-shaped glass tube with two separate temperature scales

·        One for recording the maximum temperature, other for minimum

·        Bulb on top, minimum reading scale arm is full of alcohol/mercury other contains vacuum or low-pressure gaseous vapour

·        Two small iron markers to push down the filling under the influence of magnet

·        Temperature indication at the end of markers nearest to mercury and should be the same on both scales
