Electric Vehicle (EV) maker Tesla is negotiating with three Indian suppliers in order to source critical parts as part of its plans to subsequently enter the Indian market.

The automobile manufacturer will possibly acquire critical mechanical, electronic and electrical components.

Amongst the Indian companies delivering components to Tesla include the likes of Bharat Forge, Sona Comstar and also Sandhar Technologies.

However, the Elon Musk-led company is also conducting preliminary discussions with tier 1 companies to supply components like power seats, differential gears, brakes, instrument panels, windshields etc.

Meanwhile, Economic Times (ET) has reported that Tesla has already held a meeting with Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) in relation to this matter.

One of the suppliers anonymously informed ET that suppliers are generally contractually restricted from revealing names of their customers.

Sona Comstar Chairman and ACMA President Sanjay Kapur told the publication, “As component companies up their technology quotient, they are also looking to enhance exports, as there is a huge growth opportunity there.”

Tesla actually has lesser number of suppliers given that its EVs have fewer moving parts as compared to other conventional engines. Moreover, the carmaker itself manufactures its electric components like battery pack, charger, electric motor etc.
