The US-headquartered global medical technology giant Medtronic, which has announced investing $160 million (approximately Rs 1,200 crore) to expand its engineering and innovation centre (MEIC) at Hyderabad, on Wednesday inaugurated the facility, its largest global centre outside the US.

The centre will serve as a global hub for development, testing and qualification for some of the most advanced and innovative medical technologies, said the company, adding that the centre is a step towards creating synergy by supporting Medtronic’s businesses globally in various therapeutic areas.

The areas where Medtronic’s Hyderabad Centre would focus include respiratory intervention, remote patient monitoring and digital health, surgical robotics, electrosurgical generators, cardiac rhythm and heart failure, and navigation, among others.

The newly expanded Research and Development centre spread over 150,000 square feet area will look at hiring over 1,000 scientists over the next five years with a focus on software development, testing, test automation, mechanical design, analysis and hardware. The Hyderabad centre will also provide software and engineering support to Medtronic globally.

Medtronic India managing director Madan Krishnan said the global medical technologies giant has set a strategic goal of turning the MEIC at Hyderabad to become a destination centre for medical device software and engineering solutions.

Upbeat on the growing opportunities in the Indian market, Medtronic hopes to pump in the committed investment of $160m much before the five years schedule. Despite having operations in 160 countries across the world, Medtronic chose India for its largest global innovation centre lured by the talent pool, STEM graduates, trained manpower, and technology professionals in India, he said.
